Fear gripped her. Starting from the pit of her stomach and crawling up her back then into her throat. "Master!" she could barely choke the words out. Not stopping, they continued. He had ignored her. He thought to himself that things would only become more surreal as they continued.
What she saw through her squinting eyes were wretched trees. If you were to look at them directly, they seemed to be stunted and straining over in an attempt to crawl back into thier own coiling roots. When seen through the side of your eyes, you would see a creature in torment--the straining branches were arms pulled up to cover an agonizing face caught in a frozen scream. When not directly looking at the trees, she could see the tortured faces in perfect detail, the open "O" of the mouth, the staring eyes and the drooping nose, There were the deep lines of wrinkles running down the cheeks. They cursed, pleaded and howled at them--their unheard voices hung in the air. She clutched at her Masters arm so tightly, as to cause him to look down at her with concern again. He once again placed his reassuring arm around her.
They passed by small bodies of water with oily black patches floating on top.But,thicker than water, oily in itself, poisonous. They both saw something break the surface of the thickness of the fluid, a wide, black back which rolled to the side before a wide ravenous mouth appeared, biting down on nothing. A long tail slapped down on the water before sliding back under.
Glancing off again to the distance ahead, something moved between two standing rocks. A shape not even vaguely human. In her mind she concluded it to be a snake, it had slipped into a concealed section of the trail, and she saw only a huge, sleek, round reptilian body disappearing behind the rocks. The skin was ridged and burned. She craned her neck to see where it went. In seconds they witnessed an unnerving sight of a giant worm. It swiveled towards them, veering off to the desert lands in the distance. Another animal scuttled from under a rock, heavy head and dragging body. It was one of the mutant dogs. The worm grabbed it and scooped up the dog-thing. She watched in horror as the giant worm once again crawled back under the surface of the desert..................
